When Manuel José Joaquín del Corazón de Jesús Belgrano, known as General Manuel Belgrano, created the flag, he thought of having an emblem that would distinguish his army from enemy troops and also differentiate the nascent country "from all nations." He wanted his soldiers to carry a symbol of their own to combat that would remind them of their oath to offer their lives for their country.

On February 27, 1812, on the banks of the Paraná River, Manuel Belgrano raised the flag for the first time in the same colors as the cockade.

On June 20, Flag Day, the death of its creator, General Manuel Belgrano, is commemorated.

Manuel José Joaquín del Corazón de Jesús Belgrano was an Argentine lawyer, economist, journalist, politician, diplomat and military man of outstanding performance in present-day Argentina, Paraguay and Upper Peru during the first two decades of the 19th century.

He died in total poverty on June 20, 1820, attacked by a crippling disease in a Buenos Aires ravaged by the civil war that had three different governors that day.

"I think of eternity, where I am going, and the beloved land I leave ...", he commented before dying.
